Content and Legal Research Assistant

The Alberta Legal Information Society (ALIS) is seeking a summer student for the position of Content and Legal Research Assistant. The position is based in Edmonton. 
 
ALIS is a non-profit society established in 2012 to build a website that will serve as Albertans’ first point of access to existing legal information and services in the province. The website, LegalAve.ca, currently contains information about family law. Other areas of law will be added as the website grows.

Position Description

The Content and Legal Research Assistant will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • -Using library and Internet resources to research family law topics identified by the Staff Lawyer and Information Specialist (Librarian)
  • -Assisting with the development and maintenance of glossary terms on the website
  • -Assisting with the development of plain language content for the website
  • -Assisting with the review of existing legal content created and published on the website
The work of the student will assist ALIS in meeting its objective to provide a website that guides Albertans to the appropriate legal information and resources they need to address their family law problems.
 
The Content and Legal Research Assistant will be supervised by the organization’s Staff Lawyer and Information Specialist (Librarian). There will be daily contact with the Staff Lawyer and Information Specialist, who will both be available to guide the student in their work, review completed tasks, and provide feedback. 
 
The student will receive guidance from the Staff Lawyer to help develop and improve his/her verbal and written communication, legal research skills, and analytical and technical skills. The student will also develop and be mentored on time management skills, working in a team, and collaboration.
 

Qualifications

Preferred candidates will have:
  • -completed at least two years of a law degree, 
  • -taken Family Law, and 
  • -highly developed research and writing skills. These will be assessed by their application, interview, and references.
The student must be available for 35 hours per week starting early- to mid-May and ending late August 2016. The position is a total of 16 weeks.
