Welcome to ALIS

Welcome to the Alberta Legal Information Society (ALIS) website! We are a non-profit organization that was established in 2012 to develop a centralized website where Albertans can access public legal information and resources from various organizations in the province. We launched the website—www.LegalAve.ca—in October 2015.

LegalAve was built on the same premise of other websites in Canada with a mission to increase access to justice, such as Éducaloi in Québec, Yourlegalrights in Ontario, and Clicklaw in British Columbia.

A key feature on LegalAve is the Guided Pathway—a step-by-step approach that points users to relevant legal information based on their answers to a series of questions. This makes it easier for users to find what they are looking for, even if they don’t know where to start.

The website currently contains resources and information about family law. The ALIS team consulted with various public legal education and information professionals throughout the province to create a website that addresses many of the questions Albertans have when dealing with a family law matter. This includes information about marriage and divorce, adoption, elder care, domestic violence, and child support. We will continue to update the family law content and expand LegalAve to include information on other areas of law.

LegalAve also helps service providers make effective referrals and stay current about the programs and services of other organizations. The For Service Providers page has a filtering tool that organizations can use to gather resources that are specific to a client’s needs.
